The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang (2010)

Label: Side One Dummy

With the highs still set afoot from “The ’59 Sound”; American Blues Rock ‘N’ Roll band The Gaslight Anthem needed something to up the ante. In a recent interview singer and guitarist Brandon Fallow told how “59′ Sound” was basically the sound of their influences. Now, 2010; “American Slang” needs to prove that this band isn’t just a “influence Oriented” band and that they can stand on their own with their own unique sound. This is my review of The Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang.

Nothing will stop me from enjoying this album again and again. The title track speaks to me as a classic chunk of American soul. “I got your name tattooed in the side of my arm”. Stay lucky has the attitude about it which doesn’t come easily for Gaslight. To compare it to any other gaslight album would be senseless; as this album stands alone perfectly. No album I’ve heard yet is as diverse as “American Slang”; “Stay Lucky” has the punk edge to it. Whereas “The Diamond  Church Street Choir” as an unmistakeable soul feel; “Who sings it better than the blues”. You can’t help but click your fingers to it, believe me, I’ve tried. “Boxer” unbelievably has a slight hip-hop feel to it, in the beginning at least. And let’s not forget the epic rock anthem “We Did It When We Were Young”.

“The Queen Of Lower Chelsea” is a working anthem, perfect little bit of the album, a healthy middle.

Old Haunts has to be my favourite. The thing about The gaslight that I don’t understand. Is how they can make an incredible album “The 59′ Sound” and still have more, blues, more hook catching choruses and more epically brilliants songs.

To wrap this up swiftly, The Gaslight Anthem have once again astounded me. They’ve done something that not many bands can say of late…

They’ve made an album that’s better than its predecessor “The 59′ Sound”

8/10

Audio Tragedi 10 Tracks to Hear this week [05/07/2010]

This one is well overdue…

1. Ashtar Command – Deadman’s Gun (Soundtrack to Red Dead Redemption)

In homage to Red Dead Redemption I feel this should be number one this week. Epically written power ballad for one of the best games i’ve seen in a LONG time.

WARNING: video contains Game Spoilers

2. Example – Kickstarts

New floorfiller from the standup comic /musician Example. Refreshingly catchy, with a nonchalant cleverly placed rap in between the chorus and the verse. I also believe that its this weeks UK number 9.

3. Tinnie Tempah – Frisky

Not the normal grime for me, however this song is to catchy to let lose. With it’s totally inappropriate lyrics and larger than life persona, this song is perfect for those loud youths of today. I’ve said my part, all you need to do is listen to it and find out!

4. Jason Derulo – Ridin’ Solo (Bittersweet Symphony Remix)

I must not be thinking right this week, because once again this track is not my normal listening quota. However, brilliant beat with an extremely catchy chorus, I just had to get a remix and bingo!

The verve’s bittersweet symphony brilliantly mixed with Ridin’ Solo! . . . Download it!

5. Hot Chip – I Feel Better

Brilliant song from the legendary Hot Chip, the video sprouted a new internet meme “Cancer Jesus” which makes it all that more better. The strings remind me of a little child playing his older brothers keyboard. However despite this it is a very catchy tune.

6. The Gaslight Anthem – We Did It When We Were Young

A haunting song from gaslights new album “American Slang”. With an epic ending to follow it who can resist? Review Of Gaslights new album to come soon!

7. Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill

Instantly catchy, Gorillaz new single “On Melancholy Hill” is a remnants of memories forget. Just brilliant.

8. Jose Gonzalez –  Far Away

So I think I can safely say that this weeks “10 Tracks” has been influenced by Red Dead Redemption. Far Away is one of those songs that just fitted with the mood of the game perfectly, and jose Gonzalez has become one of my favourite artists of late!

9. Eminem – Not Afraid

He’s back, the poet is back simple! this is the old new eminem, his last album was a bit poor, but if this song is anything to go by with his new album “reovery” then I’m looking forward to downloading it!

10. Jose Gonzalez – Teardrops

I like the Massive attack original used in the TV series “House” but this one brings a whole new feel to it. Download it and see!
